  Hasp Thimble.JPG - HASP THIMBLE - Steel hasp-thimble style candlestick with James patented design, length 11 1/2 in, unmarked, wave shape on spike otherwise very similar to No. 198 in Wilson’s Miners' Candlestick Guide, crude workmanship  [David Bice James of San Francisco held three different miners' candlestick patents.  Patent No. 410,116 awarded to James on September 3, 1889 incorporates a hasp-thimble design.  Although no exact example of his patent is known, the hasp-thimble is featured on a few candlesticks such as the example shown.  As with the James patent, the handle is compressed to insert or move the candle and the resulting spring tension holds the candle firmly.]
